Congressman Brad Knott Backs President Trump's Initiative to Combat Crime in Washington, D.C. |
Former Federal Prosecutor Emphasizes the Need for Strong Law Enforcement Measures |
Congressman Brad Knott, representing North Carolina's 13th District, recently joined the Republican Study Committee in Washington to support President Donald Trump's efforts to address crime in the nation's capital.
Drawing from his background as a federal prosecutor, Knott underscored the critical importance of maintaining law and order.
"I have prosecuted violent criminals, cartels, and human traffickers across the country," Knott stated during the press conference.
"It's evident that without proactive crime-fighting strategies and the pursuit of substantial sentences, criminal activities will thrive.
That's precisely the situation we've observed here in Washington, D.C."
In early August, President Trump declared a public safety emergency in Washington, D.C., assuming control of the Metropolitan Police Department and deploying over 800 National Guard troops to combat crime.
Knott highlighted the significant impact of this initiative.
"I am acquainted with some of the federal agents assigned to Washington as part of the president's plan," he noted.
"Since their deployment, the volume of contraband and the number of dangerous individuals apprehended—including those involved in drug trafficking, gang activities, illegal firearms, and human trafficking—have been staggering.
These issues are present right here in Washington, D.C."
According to recent reports, since the president's declaration, authorities have made over 1,200 arrests and seized 135 firearms.
However, some of these cases have faced scrutiny within the federal court system, with judges and defense lawyers questioning the strength of the prosecutions.
At the press conference, Knott criticized the Democratic Party's policies, asserting that they have contributed to the escalation of crime.
"The Democrats' lenient approach to crime has unfortunately allowed it to spiral out of control, both in D.C. and nationwide," Knott remarked.
"Regardless of who you are, when you come to Washington, it's a safer city now.
Businesses, families, citizens, and tourists alike are grateful.
It's time to stop ignoring crime wherever it exists."
Recent polling indicates that crime remains a top concern for voters, with over 63% expressing that it is somewhat or very concerning in their communities. |
